Blitz Tonight, Simul Photos
Tonight is an open G/5 blitz tournament. No entry fee, everyone is eligible to play.
The simul performed by Alexander Balkum was a huge success. I received lots of positive feedback from the players and Alexander did a fine job scoring 20 wins, 6 draws and 1 loss to Vincent. For his victory, Vincent received an autographed board commemorating his win.
Don't forget that this Saturday is an Austin Kids Open in Round Rock at the Springhill Suites. See Nam or Forrest for details and pre-entry. Also see Austin Kids link on right side of this blog.

Simul Tonight!
On Wednesday, August 10th at 6:00 pm the Georgetown Chess Club will host National Master Alexander Balkum (US Chess Federation rating 2219) at the Georgetown Public Library (Friends Room) who will perform a simultaneous exhibition of up to 40 boards against all comers. Club members will have priority seating on the first 20 boards with the remainder of spots being available to the general public on a first come basis. Spectators are welcome.
A simultaneous exhibition is typically performed with the Chess Master playing white against all opponents who are seated at tables forming a rectangle with the Master inside the rectangle moving from board to board. Etiquette dictates that each opponent waits until the Master arrives at the board to play their move, the Master than responds with his move and proceeds on. The players have time to think about their next move until the Master makes his way around the circuit. It is common for the Master to finish such events undefeated although occasionally an ambitious player can secure a win or a draw after a hard fought battle. Usually the event lasts about two hours with many games finishing in less then half that time.

The crosstable for the GCCJuly11Swiss can be found here.
Congratulations to Don for winning the U1500 section with 3.5 points for a clear first and an initial rating of 1551 (you are no longer eligible for the U1500 section). Honorable mention to William for tying for second with Forrest and for gaining 34 points and jumping into Class "D" at 1204.
Congratulations to Anthony and Dannie for tying for first in the Open section with 3.0 points. Anthony gained 25 points to jump into Class "A" at 1810. Dannie had a 60 point rating gain (regular: 1719) and a 125 point(!) rating gain on his QC rating to 1581(P20).
Just a reminder--no meeting on August 3rd (library closed). I'm hoping for an excellent turn-out for our August 10 simul with several players already pre-registered. I'm asking for those that wish to play to contribute $5 towards an honorarium for NM Alexander Balkum (USCF 2219) to thank him for volunteering to come to our club and perform a simultaneous exhibition.
Our August schedule is tenative as follows:
August 10th -- unrated simultaneous exhibition by NM Alexander Balkum--everyone welcome to play.
August 17th -- unrated Blitz tournament Game\5 --free entry-- number of rounds determined by entries--everyone is welcome to play.

Looks like we might be able to arrange a simul by a local Austin Master (USCF 2219) for August 10th. If we are going to do this I would like to get firm committments to attend (and play) from our members. I will have a sign-up sheet next Wednesday.

July Tourneys and August tenative schedule
The start of the lecture series seemed to be well received although we will have to adjust the timing. The interactive lecture lasted from 5:30 to 6:00 as we covered the middlegame attack and final moves of the Steinitz-Von Bardeleben game from Hastings, 1895.
Adding the Under 1500 section seemed popular as well with entries roughly evenly split among the open and u1500 sections.
Next week I will try to start the lecture by 5:15 pm in order to finish by 5:45 pm and let the games begin.
Since we are seeing an influx of new players who are not yet USCF members, we will offer a series of one night events in August with at least one unrated section. Some of the suggestions/options for the 5 Wednesdays in August include Game\5 blitz, Game\15 Quick Chess (rated/unrated--swiss or quads), Game\30 with 4 person sections 2 rounds in one night, variants include a thematic night with all games requiring the first few moves of a specific opening (i.e. Ruy Lopez, Queen's Gambit, etc.). A simul if we can lure/hire an austin master to come to Georgetown. Thomas G. has suggested dividing the club and playing a consultation game, of course this opens up all sorts of possibilities--group consulting, alternating each team member in turn to make one move without communication, candidate move voting, etc.
All suggestions welcome. Email me or add to comments below.

Blitz Results and Lecture Info
The June 29th blitz tourney was well attended for an off week event including three new players. We saw fighting chess over seven rounds with everyone getting some points.
The winner with 7-0 was Herb followed by Dannie and Forrest tied for 2nd with 5 points each.
The July Swiss already has some folks pre-registered and I'm hoping for a good turnout next week. We are adding a short lecture for the next few weeks covering basic checkmates and tactical themes. The lectures will go from 5:30 to 5:45 with tournament games starting shortly thereafter.
I'm hoping to draw some interest from the chess-oriented library patrons for the lectures and from the discussion at the club yesterday will consider some unrated beginners events along side the normal rated tournament. It was also suggested to split the July Swiss into an open event (open to all) and an under 1500 section, for those that would prefer such an option.

April Swiss Starts Tonight
We already have a couple of new players signed up for the tournament tonight. We are also trending upwards ratings-wise as a club with many of our regulars showing gains of 50-150 ratings points over the last few months.
Tournament details: 4R-SS, Game/60 with 15 sec increment preferred, one round per evening on the 6th, 13th 20th and 27th. EF: $2 (rated event--USCF membership required).
April is bringing showers of chess playing opportunites with an event this Friday, April 8 hosted by ACES. The Casis school is hosting an event by Rocks and Rooks this Saturday, April 9 including an Adult Open Section. The Laredo Open is the weekend of April 16th & 17th with two GMs and an IM already preregistered to play. And the month will be capped off with the Temple Open on April 30th. I highly recommend the Temple Event based on playing in their last tournament. The facilities were great, the players and organizers were extraordinary friendly and helpful. It's important to support local events to encourage continued opportunities for playing and I would love to see as many of our members as possible play in this event on April 30th. Mark it on your calender and make your plans now!
Details are available at the Temple Chess Club website or at Austin Chess Tournaments (both links on right). To make it even easier to register, it's my understanding that Forrest Marler will be playing in the GCC Swiss this month so you might even be able to save a stamp by preregistering with him (I'll have to check with him to see if that's possible).
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Georgetown--Temple Club Match
There is a current proposal on the table for a Georgetown\Temple club match to take place this Saturday, February 26th. They have 8 players ready to go, I know it's short notice but if you are interested please let me know asap. The event would be held in Temple beginning at 10 am (till ~ 5 pm) with a game/90 time control, USCF rated, with a break for lunch.
Players would be assigned tables by rating with 2 Temple, 2 Gtown players at each table. You would play two games, one against each opposing club member at your table. The club with the highest point total takes the traveling trophy till next year.
Their line-up is as follows:
Nate 1894
Frank 1836
Dannie ~1700
Charles 1544
Duane 1456
Forrest 1349
William 1069
Wayne 1067
Our first priority is to see if we have 8 members interested in playing this Saturday and then try to match ratings. There is no entry fee. Your only costs are for your travel and lunch. Anyone who has ever played at our club is eligible to play in this event (and I may be flexible on that if you know a ringer--kidding).
If we can't get this done this Saturday, it could occur down the road a bit, perhaps over the summer. Please call, email, or leave a comment below if you are interested.
